How do you get an 18 – 25 year old interested Politics?

by neilandreweyre

You don’t!

The 18 – 25 demographic is one of the most sought after demographics when it comes to elections because its very hard to get them interested in the boredom and monotony that is politics.
Its so mind numbingly pointless that most 18 -25 year old would rather watch paint dry! Sure there are a few out there that have spent most of their youth being active in politics with the rest doing what most 18 -25 year olds do…. Party hard!

I spent my entire 18 – 25 period in the Army and it was one really long work hard play hard period in my life. Every weekend was a ‘booze up’ All spare time that i had, I spent having fun.

That’s what 18 – 25 year olds are meant to be doing. Its the period of your life when you can eat what you want, drink what you want, do and say what you want. Its hardly the time to be getting involved in politics.

Lets be honest here. Most 18 – 25 year olds think politics is about a bunch of ‘stuffy old duffers’ trying to tell you what to do and when to do it. How you can behave and what you can say. Its intrusive and nothing to do with 18 – 25 culture.

Before you go all mad with me, yes there are people over 25 that think like that but its usually for different reasons.

This is not a plea to 18 – 25 years olds to get involved with politics. I would advise staying well away from it. Keep the party going and enjoy your youth while you still have it. Politics is a can of worms that you do not want to open if you enjoy how things are.

Its a bunch of guys promising to give you back some of the money that’s been taken from you in tax so they can win your vote. The promises are always in the abstract so that they don’t have to be kept. Why would you want to get involved in that!

What I’m asking the 18 – 25 year olds to do for this election and every other election is not to get involved but take enough interest, maybe a week or so, just to find out who the ‘stuffy old dudes’ are. Find out if you really want them running anything that is important. Find out if they are the type of person that will do things that could potentially mess up the good times you are having?

Politics has become a dirty word, not the good kind of dirty either! Its all about the party system now. Its all about what crap you can get the electorate to believe in enough for them to vote.

So all you 18 – 25 year olds not interested in politics. Avoid at all costs! Don’t let politicians get there grubby little meat hooks imbedded in your skin. Don’t play the game how they want you to play it. 18 – 25 years olds are not going to be won over with a slick leaflet or a speech from someone who cant keep a promise.

My advise to all 18 – 25 year olds is get online and spend the odd 20 – 30 mins every now and then finding out exactly who it is that will be lording over you for the next 4/5 years and then take that info and vote for the person who is least going to screw things up!

You don’t need to spend hours looking up everything, just find the candidate that is as closely aligned to what you believe in as you can and then vote for them.

If you don’t care enough to vote that’s fine too. Its your roll of the dice. If you don’t vote you might get someone good that leaves you and your way of life alone, or you could get some self important party politician that thinks the whole world has gone to pot because of those ‘pesky young uns’. Watch how quickly people with power are to take your rights away because they think you are the problem!. Its your choice and your gamble. I’d like that gamble to be on me. Vote and you could get the person you want. Don’t vote and get what you deserve.
